PrOfiLe PeEp

Introvert and extrovert is how I often describe myself. Sounds weird, but true! Isn’t it a bit extreme? I can spend multiple hours meeting friends, but I can also sit daylong holding my best friend---my pen. Yeah, I am a writer. I am an editor, too.

There’s this claim that some editors are failed writers, but so are most writers. Hearing this just makes me shrug my shoulders. Being a writer always endow me the freedom to pen down whatever I think and feel, and being an editor makes me perfect the writings technically. As a writer-editor, it’s a must to make a piece free from errors, which is the editor’s part, while retaining the degree of emotion, which is the writer’s side. Editors have an intricate eye for word usage that usually limits the feelings to be conveyed. Oh,doing both at a time is really an uphill battle. But the drive within me is oozing. Passion dictates me. I can do nothing but follow. I am grateful to be one and I take pride in it!

Here's my daily dose of inspiration from Arthur Plotnik.

“You write to communicate to the hearts and minds of others what’s burning inside you. And we edit to let the fire show through the smoke.”

Contemplating on this attests that absolute writing and editing can be both achieved!

LEARN and EARN

Today’s young Filipinos belong to a new generation of technologically-adept learners the world over. Their exposure to cable television, mobile phones, video games, and the Internet have allowed them to become a part of sweeping new changes and paradigms in the field of education.

The role of private colleges and universities is predominant in higher education. Unfortunately, most of these institutions are beyond the reach of the poor. Historically, Philippine private higher educational institutions (HEI) have made a chief role in educating the Filipino population throughout the centuries.

The unending pressure to seek better academic reputation and broaden programs relevant to the needs of economy continues to confront the private sector. They continue to face infinite challenges that concern all aspects of its existence. Without a well-established foundation, it may eventually dwindle if it fails to address increasing problems brought about by the dynamism of the market and human resource.

Currently, a new curriculum has been set up and private HEIs have been conscientiously making moves to be able to survive the eclectic demands of the 21st century. Educational transformation is always the result of social evolution. Hence, social evolution can be the result of educational transformation.

It is in this light that the essence of school evaluation be emphasized, as it is the fact that assessment in itself can contribute to enhancing academic effectiveness, thus developing the Philippine social structure.

HYBRIDS: The World’s Greenest Cars

Can you believe that a hybrid sedan can travel hundreds of miles with one tank of gas? Sounds impossible but true, these hybrid cars can tremendously save on energy.

The overuse of fossil fuels is one of the major causes of soil erosion and global warming. The air we breathe today is really contaminated with toxic emissions from gasoline-powered vehicles. With a hybrid car, those impurities will be greatly reduced due to its fuel efficiency, which in turn means lesser air pollution.

With these advantages, patronizing hybrid cars becomes a promising solution in solving “oil addiction.” With soaring gas prices and expanding holes in our Earth’s ozone layer, it makes sense to look for something more economical and environmentally friendly options.

Immortality through Cryonics?

A cadaver’s usual destination is either be rotten inside of a casket or be pulverized after cremation. Now, there’s a third choice---they can be lodged inside a deep freezing canister and wait for a possible life after death.

Scientists have great faith that future technological innovation in preserving corpses through cryonics can restore health, youth, and life. With a remarkable progress in medicine and molecular repair system, cellular deterioration might no longer exist. Therefore, aging might then be impossible and dead humans might be awakened from this “permafrost bed.”

Although cryopreservation has offered outstanding results to some people, it is still far from perfect since altering the nature of biological materials is highly crucial. It is true that some of its areas had proven extraordinary achievement in medicine, yet the process itself and its true potential should be carefully considered. In addition, ethical issues must also be dealt with. After all, these applications may be of great value in improving the quality and quantity of life. If time permits the success of cryonics, then the cause of death would be reversed!

BIO ART

Often called super mutants, the see-through frog, fluorescent fish, and sudden-death mosquito are all genetically engineered animals. The genes of these creatures are altered by experts to produce brand-new bizarre features.

Genetically modified organisms (GMO) sparked significant controversy in many areas. For skeptics, genetic manipulation should not interfere with natural evolution, while optimistic advocates see this as a continuation in the role of humanity to open a whole new array of options to improve life.

GOOD YOGURT, BAD CONTAINER

How safe are your pre-packaged berries and yogurt that you always buy in the supermarket?

Several studies have revealed that certain packaging can deposit toxins into food. With the misleading claims made on most food packaging these days, it can be hard to distinguish the truth from bad propaganda. Having said that, you better make tough choices about what you’ll consume. This is practically important because failure to make this distinction can have a big and long-lasting impact on your health and well-being.

Despite the numerous disadvantages of plastic and contaminated food containers, it is still important to be informed in order to make the healthiest choices possible for you and your family. In general, the most desirable foods out there are the whole foods provided to us by nature. Though there are still some healthy foods that are pre-packed nowadays, fresh foods should ideally be present in your everyday diet.

Synthetic Substitutes

Many movies featuring cyborgs remind us of partial or complete body replacement. In reality, humans can also possess both biological and artificial parts through implantation of man-made devices. Due to organ scarcity, natural organs are being replaced by electrical, mechanical, or robotic structures. However, their success stories are with varying degrees. Because of this tormenting scenario, scientists are encouraged to take endless steps to create the most durable and dependable synthetic organs which will redeem natural lungs, liver, pancreas, eyes, ears, limbs, and heart.

The body is an extraordinary piece of biological machinery. The organs comprising a human are all vital. If organ replacement becomes necessary, synthetic organs can take the place of biological structures. With this, organ shortage would never be a problem in extending and enhancing the quality of life.  The race is on for these mimicking organs. Let’s see what’s in store for the future.
